designing accessible content

I began my career as a copywriter, but increasingly found myself frustrated and wanting something more. It was impossible for me to just fill in the lorem ipsum in the mock-ups handed off to me by an art director. I knew I could positively impact the information architecture and screen structures. I always dabbled in photography and graphic design, but was for too long convinced my lack of drawing ability and an art degree meant I was not qualified to be a UX designer.

After a few miserable years of wondering WTF I was doing wrong as a ‘content strategist,’ I was at a breaking point. Thankfully, the same designers with whom I partnered as a writer were my biggest champions. They knew I had the skills to be a good designer. I was the only one telling myself otherwise.

That was almost 10 years ago. I’m glad the industry has moved to recognizing writers as content designers. Because that’s 100% what good product writers do. Writing is design. I’ve never been good at separating one from the other, and frankly, this is my differentiator as a UX designer. I do both — More bang for your buck!
